Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will meet US President Donald Trump in Washington on Monday, following Trump’s high-stakes summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska. The Oval Office meeting comes after what Trump described as a “long and substantive” late-night call with Zelensky.
Trump said the Alaska talks with Putin made “great progress” but stopped short of producing a deal on Ukraine. Instead, the US president is pushing for what he called a lasting “peace agreement” rather than the temporary ceasefire Kyiv and its allies have been advocating.
“It was determined by all that the best way to end the horrific war between Russia and Ukraine is to go directly to a Peace Agreement, which would end the war, and not a mere Ceasefire Agreement, which often times do not hold up,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
Zelensky’s Washington visit is expected to focus on security guarantees and the prospect of negotiations with Moscow. Trump has hinted at the possibility of a follow-up Oval Office meeting with Putin, or even a three-way summit, though Kremlin aides have played down the idea.
European officials stated that part of the discussions with Trump involved “Article 5-type” security guarantees for Ukraine mirroring NATO’s mutual defense clause but without NATO’s direct involvement. Details remain unclear, and questions linger over enforcement, given Trump’s reluctance to commit US forces.
Putin and Trump spent about six hours together in Alaska, with both men describing the encounter positively but declining to take questions afterward. Analysts say Putin emerged with two key wins from the meeting, though no formal agreement was reached.
As Zelensky prepares for his face-to-face with Trump, pressure is mounting on Ukraine to engage in talks. Trump has said the “onus” is now on Kyiv to negotiate terms with Moscow a stance likely to stir debate both in Ukraine and among its European allies.
