Forecasters have warned of possible life-threatening flooding along the US East Coast as Hurricane Erin, an unusually large storm, gathers strength in the western Atlantic Ocean
Erin, currently a Category 3 hurricane, is expected to expand in size as it tracks northwards. Although it is not forecast to make landfall, the storm is predicted to unleash powerful currents and waves on the Bahamas, Bermuda, the US East Coast and Atlantic Canada.
The US-based National Hurricane Center said the storm’s centre would pass east of the Bahamas on Tuesday before moving north between Bermuda and the US East Coast on Wednesday and Thursday. A tropical storm warning has been issued for the Turks and Caicos Islands and parts of the southeast Bahamas, while authorities on North Carolina’s Outer Banks have declared a storm surge watch.
Residents of Hatteras and Ocracoke islands have been ordered to evacuate amid warnings that the main highway linking them to the rest of the coast could be washed out. The barrier islands are already bracing for heavy surf and high winds.
Swimmers and surfers across the East Coast have also been warned of deadly rip currents. Local media reported that dozens of people were rescued from such currents on Monday at Wrightsville Beach in North Carolina.
Meteorologists have described Erin as “unusually large” and warned it could grow further. As of 05:00 local time (09:00 GMT), the storm was producing maximum sustained winds of 115mph (185 km/h).
Erin, the first hurricane of the 2025 Atlantic season, “explosively deepened and intensified” on Saturday into a Category 5 storm before fluctuating in strength.
In the Turks and Caicos Islands, authorities suspended public services on the largest island and urged residents in vulnerable areas to prepare for possible evacuation. In Puerto Rico, more than 150,000 people were left without power after high winds downed electricity lines. Local utility company Luma said emergency repairs had restored service to 95% of customers by Sunday evening.
