Russia’s Ryazan blast leaves 20 dead, 134 injured as officials probe fire-triggered explosion at unidentified industrial facility
The death toll from a mysterious explosion at an industrial facility in Russia’s Ryazan region has risen to at least 20, with another 134 people injured, local emergency officials confirmed on Sunday.
Authorities said the incident, which occurred last week southeast of Moscow, began with a fire inside a workshop. Governor Pavel Malkov initially announced the blaze on Aug 15 but provided no details about the plant’s activities or the source of ignition.
Russian media reports have not clarified what the factory produced, and official agencies have avoided confirming whether explosives, chemicals, or military equipment were involved. Emergency workers said efforts remain focused on treating the injured and securing the site.
“Twenty people died as a result of the emergency incident,” the Ryazan emergency headquarters posted on Telegram. “There are 134 injured, of which 31 patients are in hospitals in Ryazan and Moscow, while 103 patients are undergoing outpatient treatment.”
The blast marks one of the deadliest industrial accidents in Russia this year and comes amid heightened scrutiny of safety standards at factories across the country.
