BUSINESS: FG Unveils National Trade Facilitation Road Map

The Federal Government on Monday announced that the National Trade Facilitation Road map for Nigeria was ready.

According to the government, the NTFR is a living document that will guide and give direction to trade facilitation across the country, adding that it will boost the Ease of Doing Business in Nigeria campaign by the present administration.

The National Trade Facilitation Committee presented the road map to the Federal Ministry of Industry Trade and Investment in Abuja and the document was received by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Mr. Edet Akpan.

Akpan explained that trade facilitation was critical in reducing cost and time of doing business, according to a statement issued by the ministry in Abuja on Monday.

He stated that the free flow of trade constituted a critical element in Nigeria, particularly at a time when the Federal Government was doing everything possible to diversify the economy into non-oil sector.

He said the Federal Ministry of Industry Trade and Investment would continue to work with other members in the search of solutions to the nation’s collective problem in relation to trade.

The ministry’s Director of Trade, Abubakar Mohammed, who made the presentation of the road map, said the document was the result of painstaking efforts of the committee.

He said the committee recorded commendable achievements in the course of its deliberations such as the categorisation of Trade Facilitation Agreements as well as the development and validation of tools to monitor and evaluate performance in the implementation of the agreements in Nigeria.

The ministry stated that membership of the committee was drawn from the public and private sectors, as well as from civil society organisations.

“The National Trade Facilitation Agreement is consistent with Article 13 (Institutional Arrangements and Final Provisions) of the World Trade Organisation,” the ministry stated.
