Fubara To New CP: Tackle Cultism, Kidnapping In Rivers

Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has tasked the newly appointed Commissioner of Police in the State, Olugbenga Adepoju to tackle the pressing challenges of cultism and kidnapping in the state.

Governor Fubara said this during a courtesy visit by the Commissioner of Police and senior officers of the State Police Command at the Government House in Port Harcourt.

The governor also advised Adepoju against attending “nocturnal meetings” that could heighten political tensions in the state.

Having served in different roles in Rivers State, Governor Fubara encouraged him to leverage his extensive knowledge of the terrain to effectively tackle crime.

This charge comes on the heels of a tragic incident in Eleme Local Government Area, where a Dutch expatriate working with the state government, along with his driver and security aides, drowned after their vehicle plunged into a river while reportedly fleeing a kidnapping attempt.

In his response, Adepoju, who officially assumed office as the 47th Commissioner of Police on January 4, pledged to enhance intelligence gathering and response mechanisms to combat crime.

He further assured the governor of his commitment to a non-partisan approach in discharging his duties.

His previous assignments include serving as Officer in Charge of Operations during the controversial 2023 incident at the State House of Assembly, where water cannons were deployed to disrupt the Governor’s visit to the complex.
