Iran Threatens NPT Withdrawal If UN Sanctions Return

Iran has warned that it may quit the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty if UN sanctions are reinstated through the snapback mechanism.
Iran’s parliament is prepared to withdraw from the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) if the United Nations reinstates international sanctions, senior lawmaker Manouchehr Mottaki said on Wednesday.
Speaking to Defapress, Mottaki’s remarks come amid heightened tensions after European nations signalled their readiness to trigger the UN’s “snapback” mechanism, a provision allowing the automatic reimposition of sanctions if Iran is deemed in breach of nuclear commitments. The mechanism, which expires in October, is being considered by the so-called E3 group — France, Germany, and the United Kingdom.
The European position follows months of stalled nuclear diplomacy and growing concerns over Iran’s uranium enrichment activities. Tehran has consistently warned it will take “decisive measures” in response to renewed sanctions, framing NPT withdrawal as a last-resort option.
The NPT, which Iran signed in 1968 and ratified in 1970, is a cornerstone of the global nuclear non-proliferation regime, obligating signatories to refrain from developing nuclear weapons in exchange for access to civilian nuclear technology. Withdrawal from the treaty could escalate tensions further and deepen Iran’s isolation from the international community.
