Trump and Putin to meet in Anchorage as Ukraine war talks proceed without President Zelensky at the table
Trump Asserts Putin ‘Won’t Mess With Me’ Ahead of High-Stakes Alaska Summit“Putin won’t mess around with me,” declared US President Donald Trump, ahead of his much-anticipated one-on-one meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin their first in six years.
The bold statement comes as the two leaders prepare to discuss the war in Ukraine, without Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky present at the negotiating table.
The summit is scheduled to take place at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, a major US military base near Anchorage, Alaska. Once a Cold War defense outpost, the base was chosen for its security credentials and symbolic position near Russian territory. Trump visited the base during his first term and praised it as America’s “first line of defence.”
The exclusion of Zelensky from the talks has drawn sharp criticism from Kyiv. The Ukrainian president has warned that any agreements made without his participation “will be meaningless,” as the war continues to devastate Ukrainian cities and civilian life.
While Trump casts himself as a potential peacemaker, Putin is expected to maintain his demand for territorial concessions. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022 has killed tens of thousands and displaced millions.
Locals in Anchorage have expressed mixed feelings about hosting such a consequential meeting. Don Cressley, visiting from the Alaskan town of North Pole, said, “I wish Zelensky was here too, but I want this thing over. People are losing everything.” He praised Trump’s role in ceasefire efforts, calling it “awesome.”
Nearby, Anchorage resident Russell Wilson reflected on the historic nature of the event. “It’s the middle of everything,” he said while fishing at Ship Creek. “Russia’s our neighbor. It makes sense. I just hope something good comes out of it.”
As world leaders, analysts, and citizens await the outcome, all eyes turn to Alaska where diplomacy, power, and war collide in a quiet corner of America’s last frontier.
